The condition of the Atacama plateau is considered very similar to the environment of the planet Mars.
We can survive in extremely difficult conditions: Professor Storz, a writer of studies, said, “The most astonishing thing about our discovery is that mammals can survive on the peaks of volcanoes in inhospitable environments like Mars. Trained mountaineers who come here can endure such heights due to their training. If these mice can live at such heights, it shows that we have underestimated the physical resilience of small mammals.”
According to Professor Storz of the University of Nebraska in America, when he and his colleagues started exploring mountains, they found mouse mothers on the summit. After that, they began systematically exploring the peaks of all Andean volcanoes. They examined 21 volcano peaks, including 18 volcanoes that were over 6,000 meters in height.
They found the remains of 13 mice on the peaks of several volcanoes that were over 6,000 meters high.
After analyzing the genes of the mothers of the summit, a question arises regarding how mammals living in rock and ice can survive in an environment where temperatures do not go beyond zero and oxygen is scarce. Professor Storch believes that the mice were able to reach the summit on their own.
