Big statement by the New York Mayor amidst attacks on Sikhs.

New York City:  Mayor Eric Adams has said that the turban of Sikhs does not symbolize terrorism. The turban is a symbol of faith, and it is painful to associate it with terrorism. Eric’s statement comes amidst recent attacks and hate crimes against the Sikh community in America. He said that the incidents against Sikhs are a stain on our country. Some of our people have a wrong understanding of Sikhs. We need to educate people today about the Sikh religion.

Eric Adams arrived at the Baba Makhan Shah Lubana Sikh Center near South Richmond Hill for a Sikh community event. Addressing the Sikh community, he said, “You are not associated with terrorism. You are protectors. This should be taught throughout the city. Our youth need to know what your religion is and what teachings it imparts.”

On October 15th, a 19-year-old Sikh youth was attacked while going to the Gurudwara in York. During the assault, attempts were made to remove his turban while beating him. Comments targeting the Sikh youth’s religion were made.

Following this, 66-year-old Jasmer Singh was attacked on the street in New York. The Sikh elderly man’s face was targeted. Jasmer Singh died during treatment.
