A volcano erupted on Monday in Grindavik, the most populated part of Iceland. According to the New York Times, the country’s meteorological department said that before the volcano erupted, thousands of earthquakes were recorded here in the last month.
Due to the rupture of the ground in Grindavik, a crack of about 3.5 kilometres long has formed. It is just 40 kilometres away from Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland. Lava is continuously flowing from this crack at the rate of 100-200 square meters per second.
Roads started sinking in Iceland’s Reykjanes Peninsula only last month. Amidst earthquake warnings, about 4 thousand people living there were sent to safe places.
According to the country’s meteorological department, in November, lava was flowing 10 km in length under the ground of Grindavik. It was about 800 meters below the surface. According to the New York Times, about 4 volcanoes have erupted in this area in the last 2 years.
